How to Apply Perfume the Right Way (So It Lasts All Day)

VIGOR eau de parfum by Rao Scents in a golden arch

Most of us were never taught how to wear perfume. We spray the shirt collar, rub our wrists together and spray again an hour later when we can't smell it anymore. The bottle empties fast and the scent still fades by lunch.

A few small changes make the same perfume last longer and smell better on you. This guide covers where to spray, how many sprays to use, how to wear perfume on shalwar kameez and dupattas, and the mistakes almost everyone makes.

The short answer: right after a shower, spray 3 to 4 times on your pulse points (sides of the neck, behind the ears, chest and inner wrists) from about 15 to 20 cm away. Don't rub. Add one light spray on your clothes for a longer trail.

How to apply perfume, step by step

  1. Start with clean skin. The best time is right after a shower or wudu, when your skin is clean and slightly warm. Perfume sitting on sweat or old perfume smells sour and fades faster.
  2. Moisturise first. Dry skin lets fragrance evaporate quickly. A thin layer of unscented lotion, or a tiny dab of petroleum jelly on your pulse points, gives the scent something to hold on to.
  3. Hold the bottle 15 to 20 cm away. Closer than that and the perfume lands in one wet patch. Further away and most of it ends up in the air.
  4. Spray your pulse points. These are the warm spots where blood flows close to the skin: sides of the neck, behind the ears, chest and inner wrists. Body warmth gently lifts the scent through the day.
  5. Let it dry on its own. Don't rub your wrists together or wipe your neck. Give it a minute.
  6. Put on your clothes and jewellery after. Wait until the perfume has dried, then dress. Perfume can dull pearls and some metals, so wear jewellery last.

Where to spray, and why

Spot Why it works Best for
Sides of the neck Warm and close to people's noses when you greet them Everyone, every day
Behind the ears Stays warm and is rarely washed during the day A soft, close scent
Chest Under your clothes, so the scent rises slowly for hours Long days and summer
Inner wrists You move your hands a lot, which spreads the scent Daily wear (if you wash hands often, rely more on neck and chest)
Inner elbows Warm and protected Evenings and weddings

How many sprays?

Rao Scents perfumes are eau de parfums at 40% oil concentration, so you need fewer sprays than with a light body spray. Use this as a starting point:

Occasion Sprays Tip
Office, university, travel 2 to 3 Neck and chest only. People near you should notice it, not the whole room.
Everyday 3 to 4 Neck, chest and one wrist.
Dinners, parties 4 to 5 Add one spray on your clothes.
Weddings and Eid 4 to 5 Pick a richer scent and add a light mist on your outfit.
Hot summer afternoons 2 to 3 Heat makes perfume project more. Less is better.

If you can smell yourself strongly, everyone around you can too. More sprays won't make it last longer; the right spots and clean skin will.

Wearing perfume on shalwar kameez, dupattas and sherwanis

Fabric holds fragrance much longer than skin, often for days. That makes clothes your best friend for a long-lasting trail, as long as you are careful:

  • Kameez and kurta: one light spray on the inside of the collar or the chest area, not on the outside where it can mark the fabric.
  • Dupatta or scarf: one mist from a little further away (about 30 cm). As the dupatta moves, it leaves a soft trail.
  • Sherwani, waistcoat or coat: spray the lining, not the outer fabric.
  • Test first: spray a hidden spot before using perfume on white, silk, chiffon or embroidered clothes. Richer amber and oud scents can leave a light mark on delicate fabric.

7 mistakes almost everyone makes

  1. Rubbing your wrists together. It warms and breaks down the fresh top notes, so the scent opens wrong and fades faster.
  2. Spraying into the air and walking through it. Most of the perfume lands on the floor. Spray directly on your skin instead.
  3. Spraying over sweat. Adding more perfume at the end of a hot day just mixes it with sweat. Freshen up with water first, then apply one or two sprays.
  4. Over-spraying. Ten sprays won't last longer than four. It only overwhelms the people around you.
  5. Spraying straight onto your hair. Alcohol can dry hair out. Mist your comb or hairbrush once and run it through instead.
  6. Re-spraying because you can't smell it. After 20 to 30 minutes your nose gets used to your own scent. Others can still smell it. Ask someone before you spray again.
  7. Keeping the bottle in the car, bathroom or a sunny window. Heat, steam and sunlight damage perfume over time. Store it in a cool, dark cupboard with the cap on.

Summer and winter tips

In summer, apply after your shower, stick to neck and chest, and choose fresher scents for the day, like LOGIC or VIGOR for men and AFSANA for women. One extra spray at lunch keeps you fresh through a long day.

In winter, perfume evaporates slower and sits closer to the skin, so you can wear richer oud and amber scents like ROYAL TRACE or GUMAAN, and spray your coat or shawl lining for a longer trail.

Frequently asked questions

How long before going out should I apply perfume?

About 10 to 15 minutes before. That gives the alcohol time to dry, so people smell the perfume and not the spray.

Can I apply perfume right after shaving?

Avoid freshly shaved skin, because the alcohol will sting. Spray your chest, behind the ears or your clothes instead.

Is it better to spray on skin or clothes?

Both. Skin gives the true scent as it develops through the day, and clothes hold it longer. One or two sprays on skin plus one on clothes is a good balance.

Can I wear two perfumes together?

Yes, this is called layering. Choose two scents with something in common, like a rose with a rose, or an oud with a warm amber, and use fewer sprays of each.

How many sprays are in a 50 ml bottle?

Roughly 500. At 3 to 4 sprays a day, a 50 ml bottle lasts about four months of daily wear.
