Walk into any perfume shop in Pakistan and you'll hear the same three words: EDP, EDT and attar. They all smell good in the shop. The difference shows up at 3 PM on a hot day, when one is still going and another has completely disappeared.
This guide explains what each one is, which lasts longest in Pakistan's weather, and how to make any perfume last longer.
The short answer
For long wear in heat, an eau de parfum (EDP) or a pure attar will outlast an eau de toilette (EDT). The difference between EDP and attar comes down to how you want to wear it: an EDP spreads around you, while an attar stays close to your skin.
EDP vs EDT vs attar at a glance
| EDT | EDP | Attar | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Fragrance oil in alcohol | More fragrance oil in alcohol | Concentrated oil, no alcohol |
| Oil content | about 5–15% | about 15–20% (Rao Scents: 40%) | very high, often close to 100% |
| Typical wear | 3–5 hours | 6–8 hours or more | many hours, close to skin |
| Projection | Light to moderate | Moderate to strong | Soft, intimate |
| How you apply | Spray | Spray | Dab or roll on |
| Best for | Short outings, gym | Full workdays, events | Prayer, close company, traditional wear |
What is an EDT?
Eau de toilette is the lighter version. It usually has 5–15% fragrance oil, so it feels fresh and easy, but it fades faster. In Pakistan's summer heat, many EDTs are gone within a few hours. EDTs are fine for a quick outing, but they're rarely enough for a full day.
What is an EDP?
Eau de parfum carries more fragrance oil, usually 15–20%. That means it lasts longer and projects better, so people around you can smell it. For most people, an EDP is the best balance of strength, longevity and convenience.
All Rao Scents perfumes are EDPs blended at 40% oil concentration, roughly double a typical EDP. That puts them closer to extrait strength, which is why they're rated for 12–18 hours on skin.
What is an attar?
Attar (also called ittar) is a traditional perfume oil with no alcohol. Because it's almost pure oil, it lasts a long time, but it sits close to the skin rather than spreading around you. Many people in Pakistan prefer attar because it's alcohol-free, and it has a long tradition here for Jummah, Eid and religious occasions.
The trade-off: attar is applied by hand, can feel oily on hot days, and only people near you will notice it.
Why perfume fades faster in Pakistan
- Heat speeds up evaporation. The warmer your skin, the faster the lighter notes evaporate. That's why a citrus scent can vanish by lunchtime in June.
- Sweat and dry skin. Sweat dilutes perfume, and very dry skin doesn't hold scent well.
- Long hours outdoors. Commutes, bikes, rickshaws and markets mean more sun and wind on your skin than in an office-only day.
- Storage. Leaving a bottle in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill damages the fragrance over time.
10 ways to make your perfume last longer
- Apply after a shower. Clean, slightly warm skin absorbs fragrance best.
- Moisturise first. An unscented lotion or a little petroleum jelly on pulse points helps scent cling.
- Target pulse points. Sides of the neck, behind the ears, chest, inner wrists and inner elbows.
- Don't rub. Rubbing wrists together breaks down the top notes. Just spray and let it dry.
- Spray clothes and scarves. Fabric holds scent far longer than skin. Test on a hidden spot first, especially on white, silk or delicate fabrics.
- Choose the right strength. For long days, pick an EDP over an EDT.
- Pick heavier base notes for long days. Woods, amber, musk, leather and oud last longer than citrus.
- Layer lightly. A spray in the morning and one more at lunch keeps the scent fresh without overdoing it.
- Store it right. Keep bottles in a cool, dark cupboard with the cap on, never in the car.
- Don't judge it on yourself. After an hour your nose gets used to your own perfume. Others can usually still smell it even when you can't.

Frequently asked questions
Which lasts longer, EDP or attar?
Both last a long time. Attar often lasts longer on skin because it's almost pure oil, but it stays very close to you. An EDP with high oil content projects further, so people around you notice it more.
Is EDP too strong for the office?
Not if you use the right amount. Two or three sprays of a fresh EDP like LOGIC or NAZ is office-friendly. Save heavy oud and amber scents for evenings.
Can I wear EDP and attar together?
Yes. Some people dab attar on the wrists and spray an EDP on clothes. Stick to scents that share a theme, like rose with rose or oud with oud, so they don't clash.
Why can't I smell my own perfume after a while?
It's called olfactory fatigue. Your nose stops noticing a smell it's exposed to constantly. The perfume is usually still there, and people around you can still smell it, so avoid re-spraying too often.
